What is (Rheumatoid) Arthritis?
An estimated 10 million people in the UK and around 31 million in the USA have Arthritis. The most common forms are Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system – which normally protects its health by attacking foreign substances like bacteria and viruses – mistakenly attacks the joints. This creates inflammation that causes the tissue that lines the inside of joints (the synovium) to thicken, resulting in swelling and pain in and around the joints.
Through RA Awareness Week (RAAW) 2019, from 17-23 June, we are challenging these misconceptions of ‘arthritis’ being a condition of the elderly or associated with ageing. This is the 6th year RAAW and with your help we can spread the message far and wide making a significant impact on people’s understanding and perception of RA.National Rheumatoid Awareness Week
Take up swimming or try an aqua aerobics class
The water supports 90% of your body weight so there is less impact on your joints, making it an ideal arthritis care activity. Swimming is great exercise and helps you get moving, without causing any damage to your joints and muscles. Find out what we think about aqua aerobics.
Boost your diet with Omega-3 supplements
Research shows that Omega-3 fatty acids can help improve pain levels and inflammation in people with certain types of Arthritis such as RA, Reactive Arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
Versus Arthritis recommend taking a fish body oil supplement for the best results. They suggest giving it a 3 month trial period to decide if it works for you as fish oils act relatively slowly. Don’t expect to see improvements overnight.
Practising yoga on a regular basis to help reduce inflammation
A recent study conducted by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi found a link between yoga and a reduction in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) symptoms.
The research showed that those who practised yoga regularly had reduced markers of inflammation in their blood tests after 8 weeks.
A great yoga pose to try for knee pain is the Triangle Pose. It strengthens the quadriceps, inner thighs, and abdominal muscles, whilst stretching the waist, hips, and hamstrings.
